Emmentaler и Feta

English version

Very interesting article by Mark Schweizer for Class 46. It involves the willingness of the authorities in Switzerland to defend the name type Emmentaler cheese coming from the valley of Emmental, Switzerland. The European Union refused to accept the request of Switzerland for the protection of Emmentaler, as a geographical indication in the EU. This is so because in most countries such a cheese with holes is called Emmentaler, ie it has become generic concept.
On the other hand, Greek Feta cheese is protected as a geographical indication in the EU.
Switzerland is not a member of the EU refuses to recognize Feta, as a protected designation of origin in response to the EU's refusal to recognize Emmentaler. Thus the famous Greek cheese becomes hostage to the struggle between the EU and Switzerland. Development of the case will be very interesting.
